Small used car prices skyrocket

The appeal of fuel efficiency is moving beyond the new-car market and creating a run on small used cars.

Used economy cars that once could be difficult for dealers to move -- the Ford Focus and Chevrolet Aveo, for instance -- are now flying off the lots, and prices are rising. In May and June, the 10 used cars with the fastest-rising prices, according to J.D. Power & Associates, included the Hyundai Elantra, up almost 9% from the year-earlier period, and the Kia Spectra, up nearly 8%. A few years ago, the list was dominated by larger, more luxurious cars like the Lexus LS Series.

Some used cars' prices are even approaching the levels of new models.

Depreciation hels used car buyers get good deals

With gas prices hovering around $4 a gallon, consumers are giving used cars a closer look, and with good reason. According to the National Automobile Dealers Association, the average price of a used car sold by its member dealers last year was about $15,000, compared with $29,000 for new cars.

While it's important to buy a used car with a reputation for solid dependability, it's even smarter to buy a used car that is less popular with consumers, meaning it has depreciated more rapidly.

The slowest-depreciating brands are Scion, Mini, BMW, Volkswagen and Honda, according to Kelly Blue Book, a vehicle information service.

Instead of those popular models, think about some other brands that get high scores for reliability but can save thousands over similar vehicles. Consider domestic brands like Chevrolet, Dodge and Ford. Sure, it's good for the economy to buy American, but a more immediate benefit to you is that they depreciate faster than Hondas and Toyotas, meaning you will get a relative bargain.

For example, a 2006 Buick LaCrosse CX, listed among Consumer Reports' most reliable cars for 2008, can be had for $13,900, according to Kelley Blue Book, compared with $19,250 for a 2006 Toyota Camry SE V6 would cost you.

Michael Madesen's Reservoir Dogs Cadillac Fails to Sell on eBay

MichaelMadsen_Cadillac.jpgMichael Madsen's star power was not enough to sell this vintage 1966 Cadillac DeVille, the vehicle used by his character Mr. Blonde in Reservoir Dogs.

Bidding ended last night at $12,600, which did not meet the reserve, so no sale.

We kind of find this hard to believe, as counting Mr. Madsen, the car's cinematic heritage and the Caddoo itself, it really hits the trifecta of celebrity car power. The actor was also throwing in a personal meet and greet with photos, a signed edition of R-Dogs and an autograph on teh car itself -- and no one was willing to bid more than 12.6?

After the jump, Mr. Madsen's description of the car and extras -- warning ALL CAPS ahead!

Taking Over a Car Lease is the Affordable Way to Shop for Cars

MIAMI -- Still a hidden secret to millions, car shoppers can find incredible savings on vehicles available through lease transfer. Thousands of leased cars with pre-paid mileage or "equity" are often made available because the original lessee needs a way out of the lease early.

At the time of purchase, the lessee will often prepay for mileage on the leased car, or make a significant down payment resulting in a lower monthly payment. For a variety of reasons, the original lessee often needs to escape that lease contract early.
